I am honored to be able to be apart of others recovery and give back to the program that gave so freely to me. I was able to share part of my story at the treatment center I went to just living amends recently. When I decided to come down to Texas from Kansas City, Missouri, my family thought that it was a waste of my time and money because I thought I was only going to be able to afford a month down here. It was my fourth time in treatment, and they weren’t very supportive or optimistic, but I told them I was going to die without help. Towards the end of treatment, I was having panic attacks because I didn’t know what I was going to do, but then Any Length Retreat had me apply for the Living Amends scholarship. There are a lot of fearful feelings before, during and after making amends in the ninth step.

The Importance of Our Scholarship Program

living amends

Guilt for our wrongs can be one of the most deceptive recovery demons to bear because it damages us from the inside, where it happily hides. Get rid of that guilt; apologize, make your amends and let go of them. We gain humility as a result of taking a good look at the damage we did to others (and ourselves) and accepting responsibility for it. After acknowledging to ourselves what we’ve done, we take responsibility for making it right. There is nothing quite like experiencing increased humility while making amends in your Ninth Step and recognizing the self-empowerment and self-love that comes with it. When discussing our amends list with our sponsors, if we are open-minded, we can start to think about these kinds of situations in ways we haven’t thought about them before.

One of the hardest parts of recovery is facing the harm caused during active addiction. For many, that harm weighs heavily, especially when it goes against your what is alcoholism values or the kind of person you want to be. It is very important to recognize that the act of making amends is for you and not the other person.

Apologies primarily focus on expressing remorse through words, whereas making amends involves a more profound commitment to translating those words into tangible actions. We believe everyone deserves access to accurate, unbiased information about mental health and addiction. That’s why we have a comprehensive set of treatment providers and don’t charge for inclusion.

Apologizing is difficult for many people, and taking responsibility for your actions can be painful as it may remind you of the harm you have caused. However, this provides you with hope and inspiration to become and remain a better person in all future endeavors. The root of many fears and feelings boil down to guilt and shame.

And then you must avoid making the same or similar mistakes in the future. Face-to-face conversations, returning stolen items, repaying debts, or fixing broken relationships when possible. We are small and run by woman in long term sobriety who are passionate about helping the next suffering addict or alcoholic.

For a foundation on how the AA steps work as a whole, read through the FAQs of AA meetings to understand common concerns and expectations. This, in combination with financial pressure and a death in my family, finally brought me to my knees. I was finally backed into a corner that I could find no way out of on my own, was forced to admit absolute and utter defeat, and was given the precious gift of spiritual desperation. When I don’t do things perfectly, when I mess up, when I make mistakes, and when I make poor choices, I would love it if I am quickly forgiven and not chastised about the matter.

  • If you’re trying to find step 9 AA guidance that’s clear, structured, and meaningful, this article will walk you through what the step is, why it matters, and how to approach it with integrity.
  • It’s essential to recognize that making amends involves recognizing and admitting the harm done, which can be a tough emotional hurdle.
  • After acknowledging to ourselves what we’ve done, we take responsibility for making it right.
  • This scholarship has given me a chance to get a strong foothold in the sober community here in Austin.

I let him decide if he wants to do laundry at midnight or wear dirty clothes. I no longer interrogate him about his day at school, so I can give my wise advice on how to handle difficult peers. I’m not his teacher, and I’m sure she’s skilled at handling that type of problem.
